Physiotherapy

LiveActive Sport Medicine physiotherapists complete thorough assessments, arrive at a clinical diagnosis, and design individualized therapeutic exercises to optimize strength, range of motion, and function aligned with their patients’ goals.

Physiotherapy is a hands-on physical therapy that involves restoration of normal muscle and joint movement, the use of techniques to reduce pain and swelling, and patient education to improve posture, movement and strengthening.

Physiotherapists are university graduates who have completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiotherapy or a clinical Master’s of Science degree in Physiotherapy. They undergo rigorous examinations to complete their programme and to be granted their registration as physiotherapists in the Province of Ontario.

LiveActive Sport Medicine physiotherapists have, and continued to study extensive post- graduate training in advanced orthopaedic assessment and treatment skills, Active Release Therapy® and medical acupuncture. Those interested in sport can certify and earn a Diploma in Sports Physiotherapy, making them excellent therapists for major sport events such as World Championships and the Olympics.
LiveActive Physiotherapists are skilled in these areas of advanced therapy.

When meeting the LiveActive Sport Medicine physiotherapist for the first time the physiotherapist will enquire about the nature of the problem, complete a thorough assessment of the body area of concern then discuss the treatment that will be helpful to begin restoring function and return to sport.

Physiotherapy treatments will generally include instruction in exercises to be completed between visits, empowering the patient to have an active role in recovery and return to sport.

Chiropractic Therapy

What are Chiropractors?
Doctors of Chiropractic are concerned with how the body’s nerves, muscles and joints function as a whole. They focus on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the body. They are specialists in using manipulations of joints to improve range of motion and flexibility, and to restore proper function. Patients often note positive changes in their symptoms immediately following treatment.  Chiropractors may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the musculoskeletal aspects of discomfort associated with a medical condition.

Chiropractic care may also provide symptomatic relief to patients with chronic conditions. By treating the musculoskeletal elements of such disorders, chiropractic treatment improves the general well being of the patient. In this regard, Canada’s chiropractors frequently provide complementary care as one element of a patient’s overall treatment program.

What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic today is one of the largest primary-contact health care professions in Canada with over 5,000 practicing chiropractors in Canada. Approximately four and a half million Canadians use the services of a chiropractor each year.

Chiropractic is a regulated health profession recognized by statute in all Canadian provinces and American states. The benefits of chiropractic care are well recognized by other health practitioners. Most physicians will refer patients to chiropractic colleagues for care.

Drug-free, non-invasive health care
Chiropractic manipulation is a drug-free, non-invasive manual procedure that utilizes the highly refined skills developed during four intensive years of chiropractic education.

Manipulation is a highly controlled procedure, which rarely causes discomfort. The chiropractor adapts the procedure to meet the specific needs of each patient. The vast majority of patients who seek chiropractic care do so for complaints of the musculoskeletal system, most often for conditions affecting the spine.
Scientific study of spinal manipulation has clearly demonstrated that chiropractic treatment improves function and is effective for common conditions such as headache, neck, and back pain.  Between 86 and 96 per cent of all visits to chiropractors are for these or similar conditions.

Primary & complementary care
Chiropractors work in conjunction with other members of the health care team, especially in the care of musculoskeletal problems, such a low back pain, injury recovery and rehabilitation and age related conditions such as osteoarthritis.

Multi-disciplinary care allows enhanced care for patients, encourages communication between care providers and results in clinical recovery sooner.  Chiropractors may be the lead practitioner in patient care in the community, a consultant in the hospital setting or a member of a larger health care team for an organization or sport group.

Regulation & standards
In Ontario, chiropractic has been governed by statute since 1925. Currently the Chiropractic Act (1991) administered by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario and created in accordance with the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) (1991) regulates it.

Chiropractors along with medical doctors, dentists, psychologists, and optometrists have the legislated right and obligation to communicate a diagnosis and to use the title doctor. The College of Chiropractors of Ontario is as are the regulatory bodies for other health professions responsible for protecting the public, standards of practice, disciplinary issues, quality assurance and maintenance of competency.

Massage Therapy

Therapeutic Massage
Massage therapy is primarily a hands-on manipulation of the soft tissues of muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints. It may be for treatment of a specific musculoskeletal problem or for the purpose of optimizing health.

Therapeutic Massage effect optimizes health and well-being by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Improvement in function, mobility and a reduction in pain and stress are goals which may be achieved through massage therapy.

Modern massage techniques can be traced back to Swedish massage developed in the 1700’s, the first systematic method of therapeutic massage based on physiology. Massage Therapists may combine other soft tissue techniques, acupuncture, exercise prescription or other treatments with their applied knowledge of anatomy and physiology to achieve improved function and pain management for patients.

Massage Therapy Treatments
Before a treatment, the Massage Therapist will complete an assessment of a patient’s concerns and overall health. Once the assessment has been completed a treatment approach/ plan will be proposed, with patient consent.

Massage therapy can be done over clothes, or sheets or directly upon uncovered skin depending upon the nature of the problem and patient preference and comfort. A soothing lotion is used, that allows smooth manual technique but does not stain clothing.

Various specialized techniques using hands, arms and elbows, over the skin or clothes, make up the Massage Therapy treatment. The therapist will work with the patient’s pain tolerance during the treatment, and the treatment can be stopped at any time should the treatment become uncomfortable.

Massage therapy is covered by many private insurance companies as part of their extended health care plans.

Fascial Stretch Therapy

Fascial Stretch Therapy is a partner assisted stretching technique developed by Ann and Chris Frederick.  Originally designed for athletes, FST is effective and beneficial for people of all ages and activity levels.  The key to unlocking your flexibility lies in your fascia.  Fascia is dense fibrous connective tissue that interpenetrates and surrounds all muscles, bones, nerves, and blood vessels of the body.  FST will reorganize, realign and restore your fascia. Based on science and developed in clinic, this gentle stretching system focuses on connective tissues, lines of fascia in the body, and human movement – not just muscles. FST is a synergist with all other modalities of therapy and compliments all sports or training regimens.  Pain-free gains in range of motion are the most frequently reported benefits, however FST has a variety of benefits, which include:
  • Increased performance
  • Decrease in the likelihood of injury
  • Improved sleep
  • Increased proprioception/body awareness
  • Resolution of some types of chronic pain
  • Improved posture
  • Enhanced recovery post-activity
  • Reduced levels of stress
  • Reduction of trigger points/adhesions within tissues
  • Improved flexibility on the first session, is cumulative with multiple sessions
A typical FST session ranges from 30-60 minutes and is tailored to the individual. Often the patient is presented with personalized mobility protocols, which are intended to maintain and further the gains in range of motion achieved in session.
